Views
What Inbox, Today, Upcoming, Anytime, Someday, and Logbook are for, and how a task ends up in each one.
Done Bear is GTD-shaped. Every task sits in exactly one view, and you never file a task into a view directly. The view is derived from the task's state and its start date, so changing the date is what moves the task.
The views
- Inbox — captured, not yet placed. No start date, no bucket.
- Today — the start date is today or earlier.
- Upcoming — the start date is in the future.
- Anytime — actionable now, with no date pressure.
- Someday — parked. Not on any list you work from day to day.
- Logbook — completed.
- Trash — archived.
How a task lands in a view
A new task goes to Today unless you send it somewhere else, so anything you add without stopping to think about it is on today's list. Sending it elsewhere is just setting a start date:
- Give it a start date of today, and it is in Today.
- Give it a start date in the future, and it is in Upcoming until that date arrives — then it moves to Today on its own.
- Mark it as something to do with no particular date, and it is in Anytime.
- Park it, and it is in Someday.
- Take the start date off it, and it is back in the Inbox.
Completing a task moves it to the Logbook. Archiving it moves it to Trash, which is not a delete but does take the task out of every working view.
A due deadline overrides the bucket
A task whose deadline is today or already past appears in Today no matter which bucket it is in. A deadline that has passed is more urgent than one landing today, so an overdue task never quietly drops back into Anytime or Someday where you would stop seeing it.
This is the usual answer to "why is this in my Today list when I never put it there".
Which view to pick
Because new tasks land in Today, adding one is already a small commitment to doing it today. That is what you want when you are capturing something you mean to get to now. When you are emptying your head instead, send it to the and decide later — a Today list you cannot finish stops being a plan.
